An open letter from two-time World Motocross Champion Sebastien Tortelli regarding the Grand Prix of Mexico

Hi Friends,

I am back home from Mexico after a difficult and controversial MX GP. After all that has been said and done it is important for me to give you my perspective and clarify some points.

As you know, there are always two sides to a story so here is mine.

Let me go back: About three years ago I met Nico Espana, an event promoter of Supercross, Motocross and Freestyle MX.

The idea then came to create a “World Celebrity MX Race”, a friendly motocross event that would gather top retired and actives racers from the world.

In October 2010, this race was born with names like Stefan Everts, David Vuillemin, Damon Huffman, Doug Dubach, Jason Thomas, Sean Hamblin, Pedro Gonzales, Antonio Balbi … and myself. The race was a success and all racers went back home happy after their Mexican weekend.

Then the idea of a Mexican Grand Prix of Motocross came. Mexico is a land still untouched in this market and thus represents a potentially lucrative area for the development and the growth of our sport. Obviously the challenge was big given the economic, social, cultural and geographical situation.

Organizing a GP is at least a year of work, preparation,  planning, budgeting, … therefore I did many trips to Guadalajara this past year.

For the final preparation i arrived on site ten days prior to the event. There, I discovered a rather nice track while recognizing that the circuit would be difficult, technical and physical. (5,500 feet in elevation, temps around 90 F.) The date of the GP was not ideal, but again for logistical reasons with the Brazilian GP, this date was best suited for the riders and teams. I remind you that it is a World Championship and in order to keep is authenticity it must have exotic GP’s and go out of Europe!!

The biggest problem that we encountered was obviously the management of water on the track. When you hire locals for one week to water the track … they showed up the first four days, but not the fifth one!! It was not an easy situation to say the least!

Now let me talk about the facts:

The Track: YES, the conditions were not perfect and we had two very dusty corners (a water truck rolled over and another one broke down.) The FIM therefore gave us an extra 1/2 hour in order to fix the trouble areas.

The crew worked hard and we solved the problem in the time allowed by the FIM. Meanwhile the riders had already made up their minds and put on their shorts without even bothering to do a sight lap to judge the state of the track, which was at that time ride-able and safe. (I personally rode during my career in worse conditions than those for a GP). If they want no dust or mud or ruts they should consider Moto GP!

YES the track was challenging (for the reasons already mentioned) but it’s a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!! Not every track can be to everybody’s liking, but as a GP racer your job is to perform on any type of track and situation, as long as your safety is not in danger (which in my opinion was not the case).

Safety: YES there were 15 doctors and six ambulances all weekend, never would the FIM validate a GP without medical crew on site!!! This is a liability issue for FIM, YouthStream and the Organization, if not done correctly. FIM will not allowed a bike on the track until all medical personal are present.

So those who believed those rumors were naïve …

YES Mexico is not the safest place on earth so we had 60 security guards and armed police forces patrolling on site all weekend. But again, when you’re in such places you don’t do stupid things like some did!!!! Guys were complaining because they got robbed only to find out they left their backpack exposed with their passport inside on the back of their rental car!!!

Well, what do you want me to say to that?

TV coverage: YES it was bad and poorly filmed, I agree it is really bad to miss any starts of the race. It was not the responsibility of the organization but rather the responsibility of the local TV.

Now the riders … it was disappointing to me to see an irresponsible and unprofessional attitude of the majority of them, which made the situation worse.

Not one rider came to me to discuss the situation in an attempt to find a solution. Most of them know me, I never had the reputation of being irrational or irresponsible so I was very hurt that none came to me.

The MX2 lap times sessions were fine and the dust problem came up only for MX1.The extra half hour that the FIM gave us was plenty of time to water the two corners and be ready for them. Instead they all went on strike …

In conclusion: A headline in the National newspaper, and National TV announcing the cancellation of the GP … therefore a smaller crowd showed up on Sunday.

I feel the racers gave a bad image of our sport in a country that needed help to grow it.

At the end of the day, the best racers won as usual because in order to become or to be a champion, you must have the abilities to overcome what comes your way, whether you like it or don’t.

Some riders finally came to me Sunday night telling me the track was fine (even if it wasn’t the best) but they had to stick with the group!!!!!!

The bottom line is that this GP was the perfect excuse to make a point of the different issues they are dealing with in this tough economy … but the show must go on!!!!!

Thanks for reading,

Sebastien Tortelli

Troy Lee Designs Calls Up Jessy Nelson

Posted by adrenalinemx on May 18, 2012

Thursday, 17 May 2012 21:25

For the past two years the Troy Lee Designs / Lucas Oil / Honda team has been supporting amateur standout Jessy Nelson.

news12 mx jessynelson pro1

Jessy was one of the original members of the Red Bull Jams program so it is only fitting that he makes his way to Red Bull’s support team. Nelson has been very successful early on this year winning several championships along the way. Originally Jessy was supposed to join the pro team after Loretta Lynn’s but he has been spending some time in California doing motos with his teammates and it was decided by all parties to move him up for the 2012 outdoor season.

Nelson is already signed for the 2013 season with an option for 2014.

news12 mx jessynelson pro2

“We’ve had him out doing some motos and riding with the other guys,” said Tyler Keefe, the team’s manager. “We started thinking about him doing the nationals with us back then. We talked with Jessy about it and at first he wanted to think about it a little. After weighing his options he made the call to start his pro career this weekend at Hangtown.”

Nelson is excited about his first pro race.

“I’m pretty anxious to get out there and see how I do,” says Jessy. “I’m really happy with the bikes and I feel like I’ve been riding well. This will be a great opportunity for me to get some experience for the 2013 season. I think it’s a good idea to start with motocross and then I’ll have less to stress out about when we show up for Anaheim 1 next year. This should be fun.”

Nelson will be running the #136 bike this weekend in Sacramento at what is technically his home track. Be sure to stop by and say hello to the newest team member this weekend!

Honda World Motocross Team closer to full strength in Brazil

Posted by adrenalinemx on May 18, 2012

The Honda World Motocross team is looking forward to this weekend’s Grand Prix in Beto Carrero, Brazil with riders Rui Gonçalves and Evgeny Bobryshev feeling stronger while recovering from their ailments for round five of the MX1 World Championship.

amb bobryshev gp04 mex2012 d8795

The event this weekend is particularly special for the Honda World Motocross squad, as the Grand Prix is sponsored by Honda Brazil and the team has extra support from the many fans attending the sell-out race. After a tough Mexican Grand Prix last week in which Bobryshev sat out of proceedings while Gonçalves sustained a hand injury to add to the damaged tendon in his groin, results were not as the team had hoped for heading into the overseas races.

However, with some time travelling and resting this week, both riders are extra motivated with Bobryshev hungry to get back on his bike and Gonçalves, who celebrates his 27th birthday today, is keen to put in a strong performance in front of the fans whose native language is also the same as his (Portuguese).

It won’t be easy for either rider as Bobryshev, who still has a swollen thumb from a crash earlier in the year, has had little time on the bike in the past few months and is unsure of what to expect this weekend after the Bronchitis he suffered in Mexico left him with no energy, breathing difficulties and vertigo while riding the bike. Gonçalves also has a swollen thumb on the right hand and after some light training this week he is sure his leg is still problematic, but as always the Honda duo will be putting the best possible performance together aboard their factory Dunlop-shod CRF 450R machines to get their championship challenges back on track before heading home to Europe.

amb goncalves gp04 mex2012 d7290

Rui Gonçalves #999, “I am looking forward to this weekend but it’s frustrating that I am not perfectly fit. I did some running this week and my leg is still painful, so it is not healed yet. My thumb is recovering too, but it is still a bit swollen and it is quite painful, so it’s going to be hard work again this weekend. We need to do what we can with what we have and mentally I feel good; I think it’s important to stay positive to do the best job possible. It’s been good this week to be together with the team and have some time talking before the weekend, as it brings a really nice feeling. The track looks really good, as it has been well prepared with grass around it, and everything is ready for a good race. There will be lots of fans there and they speak the same language as me pretty much, so it’s nice to be in Brazil and be able to chat to the people here. While I’m not putting a huge expectation in for the races, we will do what we can and then head back to Europe to get my injuries healed up.”

Evgeny Bobryshev #777, “For sure I feel much better than in Mexico with the Bronchitis. I feel better in myself, and I have some energy. I want to ride now; I missed the racing and I’ve had so little time on the bike that I just want things to get back to how they should be. We will see how it goes as although I am getting healthy, I’m still struggling a little bit with the lungs and I won’t know until I’m on the bike where we are at with my fitness. It won’t be easy, as I haven’t ridden much, but we will start slowly to get used to the bike again and progress from there throughout Saturday. My thumb is not perfect, but it is much better, as I can ride without painkillers now. The track looks good with the jumps and it has been well prepared, so I hope I can bring some good points back home.”

Lorenzo Resta: Honda World Motocross Team Manager, “We are really impressed with the level of the track and facilities in Beto Carrero. It’s almost like a stadium with where the people can sit and see most of the track. Honda Brazil has given us such a warm welcome with a special box for us to work from and it’s almost like another home GP with their support, Rui speaking the language so well and our chief mechanic Marcus is Brazilian. We are really happy and the facilities here are at World Championship level, not like we saw last week. The situation with the riders is a little bit better than it was in Mexico. Rui still has some problems with his thumb, but it’s his birthday today, so it could be a special weekend for him and we hope he gives himself a gift with a good result. Bobby is also much better than in Mexico, as he has no fever and is feeling good. The altitude was also a problem for him, and we are at sea level here with the temperature a little lower, which should help him, although it will be quite difficult for him to do the races with so little time on the bike.”

Led by duo of SX champions, GEICO Honda team ready for outdoor action

Posted by adrenalinemx on May 17, 2012

Wednesday, 16 May 2012 17:25

It’s a new season but the same mindset for GEICO Honda riders Justin Barcia, Eli Tomac, Justin Bogle and Wil Hahn as they head west for the start of the Lucas Oil AMA Motorcross Championships this Saturday at the historic Hangtown Nationals.

The team is trading in the fireworks and bright lights of Supercross for Motocross’ grueling afternoons under the sun, and SX Lites West champion Tomac says he can’t wait to get started.

“I very much looking forward to Hangtown,” Tomac said. “I got a win there in 2010 in my first race as a pro. Last year wasn’t as good, but it was still a fourth place finish. I think after the success the team had in Supercross, we’re all going to be dialed in right from the start. It’s going to be a really fun outdoor season.”

SX Lites East Champion Barcia said he’s itching to tackle the 12-race motocross season at 100 percent health for the first time in two years.

“I’m looking forward to it definitely,” Barcia said. “I’m glad to be completely healthy going into a Motocross season because that hasn’t happened in a while. Myself and the rest of the team had such a good year in Supercross and we want to be able to back it up during the outdoor season. We want to show everyone that we’re all-around riders.”

For Hahn and Bogle, the new season means they can put the ups and downs of their individual indoor campaigns aside and get a fresh start.

“It’s nice to have a clean slate,” said Hahn, who reached the podium in the SX finale. “I’ve got some momentum on my side right now. I feel good after doing the three rounds on the 450 in Supercross and the final two rounds on my 250. I’m just looking to continue the progress I’ve been making every day on the track. Right now I’m enjoying things more than I ever have. It’s a good feeling and I want to keep moving with it.”

Bogle said he’s excited to get back to the part of the sport he loves most.

“It’s a chance to turn things around,” Bogle said. “I’m ready to get out there, ride hard and get good finishes. I like motocross more than Supercross, so I’ve been having a lot more fun in training during the week.”

Hahn said the team practices preparing for outdoor season have been intense, but fun.

“For the past few weeks, we’ve been really working well as a team,” Hahn said. “The four of us have been real tight with everything. We’ve all put in a lot of work to get the bikes and ourselves ready to race. We’ve been pushing each other on and off the track. We’ve got two champions in Justin and Eli, and Bogle is awesome in the outdoors. It’s great to push each other so intensely but still have friendly moments when we’re done.”

Practice for the Hangtown National gets under way at 8:30 a.m. PDT on Saturday with Opening ceremonies slated for 12:40 p.m. FUEL TV will air the first motos starting at 4 p.m. EDT and the NBC Sports Network will air the second motos starting Sunday at 12:30 a.m. EDT.

Broc Glover, Dunlop’s Senior Manager, Motorcycle Off-Road, was awarded the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Lifetime Achievement Award at the season-ending award banquet in Las Vegas, NV. Glover, who spearhead’s Dunlop’s Supercross, Motocross and off-road racing efforts, had this to say about the prestigious award.

“I feel very fortunate that I have been able to turn my passion for motorcycle racing into a career that has gone well beyond my years as a racer. I really want to thank the people at Feld Motorsports for this award, as well as all my past fellow competitors and peers, and the entire racing community that I have the pleasure to work with. Of course, I would also like to thank the Dunlop trackside crew and everyone back at Dunlop headquarters in Buffalo, NY, who work so hard to support the AMA Supercross and Motocross paddock. Three years ago, Dunlop stepped up an already high level of support in the AMA Pro paddock, and this program is something I am very proud to be a part of.”

Dunlop-sponsored riders have won every AMA Pro Supercross and Motocross championship in 2010, 2011 and all three Supercross championships in 2012 with Ryan Villopoto, Eli Tomac and Justin Barcia.

Double KTM victory, while David Philippaerts shines in Mexico

Posted by adrenalinemx on May 14, 2012

Sunday, 13 May 2012 22:25

Nicolas España’s track hosted today the fourth Grand Prix of the FIM Motocross World Championship, where Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings handed another double victory to KTM. There was very exciting racing in both classes and the big crowd present in the GP could enjoy watching the best riders in the world racing with their Mexican idols.

20120513-mexicogp-davidphilippaerts

Antonio Cairoli had a tough second race but he got an eventual overall victory after crossing the finish line third in the second lap. Clement Desalle gave all his best once again this weekend, but had to settle down with a second overall position as he could not keep the lead in the second heat until the chequered flag. David Philippaerts won the second heat and completed the podium in Mexico.

In the MX2 class Jeffrey Herlings dominated both heats, but Tommy Searle proved that he has the speed and the rhythm to be at the top but he was touched once again by bad luck. Jeremy Van Horebeek did two solid motos and he was third overall of the GP.

MX1
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Cairoli obtained the second GP win of the season in Mexico after going 1-3 in today’s races. In the first heat, after the first ten minutes the Italian found his rhythm and managed to overtake Desalle and Pourcel and Cairoli pulled away with the victory. At the start of the second heat Cairoli almost crashed and was down to sixth and he then pushed really hard to finish third and obtain the final overall victory.

Rockstar Energy Suzuki World’s Desalle finished second in both heats and he missed the first step of the podium for just one point. The Belgian rode a consistent first moto, and in the second one he moved from third to first and exchanged the lead with Philippaerts during the last minutes of the race. In the end, Philippaerts imposed an incredible rhythm and Desalle had to settle down with the second place.

Monster Energy Yamaha’s Philippaerts had a really tough first heat, as he suffered a heavy crash at the start of the first race and had to enter the pitlane. However, the Italian did not give up and finished tenth. Philippaerts made an outstanding second heat, moving from sixth to first imposing a superb rhythm, and obtained the third overall position.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s De Dycker ended fourth overall, being tight in points with Philippaerts. This weekend De Dycker obtained the best result of the season after finishing third in the first heat. However, he did not have such a good second race and could only cross the finish line fifth and this is why he missed the opportunity of being on the podium today.

It was one of the best weekends for Rockstar Energy Suzuki World’s Leok finishing fifth overall thanks to his 6-6 result. In the first heat, the Estonian had to fight really hard to go from an initial twelfth position up to sixth, but in the second one he managed to ride a consistent moto from beginning to the end.

Boog had a bad start in the first heat, but he gave his best to move from 17th up to the eighth position. However, in the second heat he rode second behind Christophe Pourcel during the first laps, but in the end he had to settle down with the seventh place, which have give the sixth overall position.

Strijbos went 5-10 and finished seventh overall tight in points with Boog. Eighth was Barragán and Gonçalves and Christophe Pourcel completed the top ten.

Christophe Pourcel took the holeshot of both heats, but could not keep the lead in neither of the two. In the first moto, he got some green fence stuck on his back wheel and had to pull out while he was fourth, whereas in the second race he was not able to keep the rhythm of his pursuers and crossed the finish line fourth.

On the other hand, Paulin did not have an excellent start in the first race, but he managed to cross the finish line in the fourth position. However, the French rider was not able to start the second heat because his engine failed during the sighting lap.

His compatriot Frossard hit his leg on the ground during the first heat and he could not stand the pain on his still injured right knee and he had to enter the pitlane. The weekend was over for the French rider and he is now a doubt for the upcoming Grand Prix.

Simpson was also another unfortunate rider of the weekend, as he dislocated his left shoulder during the first heat.
Fernandéz, winner of yesterday’s qualifying race, was seventeenth overall today and home rider Martin García achieved his initial goal and he finished nineteenth.

MX2
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Herlings had another perfect weekend and managed to win both heats with superb authority. In the first moto Herlings was fifth in the opening lap, but he then quickly moved up to the lead in the fourth lap. From then on, the Dutch rider imposed his rhythm even having some problems with his goggles since the very beginning of the race. In the second heat, he had a good start and managed to lead the race from beginning to end, crossing the finish line with almost 25 seconds advantage over the second classified Searle.

Team Floride Monster Energy Kawasaki Pro Circuit’s Searle was on the second step of the podium this weekend in Mexico after finishing second in both heats. The British rider could not start in the front in the first race and he struggled a little bit to climb up to the final second position. In the second race, Searle had a good start but he made a mistake in the first lap and went down to ninth. However, he managed to recover himself really quickly and he achieved crossing the finish line second once again.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Van Horebeek was back on the podium this weekend and he managed to keep the second position of the championship one point ahead Searle. Van Horebeek took the holeshot in both heats and in the first one he managed to keep the lead during the first three laps. The Belgian rider pushed so much to chase Herlings, that by the end of the race he had run out of energy and finished third. Between the motos Van Horebeek was a bit sick due to the extra effort of the first race, but he succeeded in finishing third and going up again on the podium.

Team Floride Monster Energy Kawasaki Pro Circuit’s Roelants was back on the bike this weekend after the big crash he suffered in Italy during the first moto two weeks ago, and with the overall fourth position he actually proved that he is fully fit again. In the first heat Roelants did not have a really good start and he was only sixth, but he rode a solid second moto and crossed the finish line in the fourth position.

Monster Energy Yamaha’s Charlier has obtained the best result of the season this weekend after his injury on his right foot. Charlier was very satisfied with his fifth overall position and he is now looking forward to racing next week in Brazil to try to improve this weekend’s result.

Tixier finished in a consistent fifth position in the first race, but he crashed in the second moto while he was fourth and he went down to eighth. The French rider could not improve such positon and he obtained the sixth overall place.
Nicholls was seventh of the GP of Mexico and he was followed by Anstie, who had been second yesterday at the qualifying race. Coldenhoff was ninth and Lupino completed the top ten.

Ferrandis obtained a really good fourth position in the first race, but he crashed at the start of the second moto and he was out of the race because his bike was badly damaged. The French young rider finished eleventh overall.

His teammate Teillet was riding third in the first race, when he crashed and had to enter the pitlane because he had a severe pain on his left hand. Fortunately, he has nothing broken, but he could not take part in the second heat.

Leib, winner of the MX2 qualifying race yesterday, injured his left hand in the first heat while he was sixth and he was also taken to the hospital. As Teillet, the American does not have anything broken, but he was not able to enter the second heat.
The best Mexican MX2 rider was Luis Ruelas who finished in the eighteenth overall position.
