Cole Seely to ride American Honda CRF450R at 2012 Atlanta SX

Team Honda Muscle Milk recently announced that current Troy Lee Designs / Lucas Oil / Honda Supercross Lites rider Cole Seely will fill in for injured Team Honda Muscle Milk rider Trey Canard at select Supercross races beginning with the coming Atlanta round next weekend.

Canard suffered a back injury at the Dodger Stadium Supercross that has unfortunately sidelined the popular rider for the remainder of the Supercross season. Commencing at the Atlanta Supercross event, Seely will step up to the Supercross class on Canard’s CRF450R. This is the second time Seely has filled in on the Honda team for an injured rider. Last year, he had great success filling in for Josh Grant between Lites West rounds.

Seely started the 2012 Lites West title chase with a bang, scoring a win in the opening round at Anaheim 1. The 21-year-old from Newbury Park, CA added a pair of seconds to that win so far this season and is currently third overall in the championship as the Lites West series takes a nine week break.

“Cole proved last year that he has what it takes to run in the Supercross class,” said Team Honda Muscle Milk Manager Erik Kehoe. “He’s a hard-charger, and a good fit for the team. It’s a great opportunity for Cole to showcase his capability on the CRF450R, while maintaining his competitive skills during the break. I want to thank everyone at the Troy Lee Designs / Lucas Oil / Honda team and all their sponsors for allowing Cole another opportunity to race a factory Honda for Team Honda Muscle Milk.”

“Any time you get an opportunity to ride a factory Honda, it’s hard to turn it down no matter how close the points are in the west,” says Cole Seely. “I look at it as more seat time for me before I get back on my 250.”

Troy Lee Designs / Lucas Oil / Honda Team manager Tyler Keefe had this to say:

“This is a great opportunity for Cole. He has shown more speed and confidence this year and I think he will do very well this time around. When the series heads back to the West coast and Cole gets back on his TLD / Lucas Oil / Honda CRF 250R, I think his time with American Honda on the 450 will help him generate even more speed that he can carry over into the outdoor nationals.”

Tyler Bowers Has Championship in His Sights as 2012 AMA Arenacross Series Season Concludes in Minneapolis

Western Regional Arenacross Lites Champion Will Also be Crowned

The AMA Arenacross Series season has seen the world’s best arenacross riders wage war inside the country’s most popular arenas since October. Now, following 11 rounds of intense bar-to-bar competition, a pair of champions will be crowned on Saturday night inside Minneapolis’ Target Center for the 12th and final round of the 2012 season.

On the heels of an impressive two-night sweep this past weekend in Reno, Babbitt’s Monster Energy/AMSOIL Kawasaki presented by Maxxis’ Tyler Bowers needs just one point this weekend to secure back-to-back Arenacross Class Championships, which hasn’t happened since Darcy Lange accomplished the same feat in 2004 and 2005. Bowers’ 12 main event wins matches his total from last season and based on the way he’s been riding recently, he could very well improve on that impressive mark.

Last weekend in Reno, FMF Power/Poynt TUF Honda’s Jeff Gibson was looking to capitalize on a big win he achieved one week prior and hopefully gain even more ground on Bowers in the premier class standings. Out of the gate in each of the weekend’s two main events. Gibson did what he needed to do, grabbing the early lead and trying to pull away from the field. On each night, however, Bowers followed Gibson in second and tactically put himself in position to win both times, gaining six points on his rival over the course of the weekend and putting himself as close as possible to clinching the 2012 championship.

In order to secure his second consecutive Arenacross Class crown, Bowers simply needs to qualify for the main event on Saturday night. In the world of arenacross, anything can happen at any given moment and while his task should be a relatively easy one to accomplish, Bowers still has some work to do inside the Target Center this weekend.

Along with the drama of the premier class, the Western Regional Arenacross Lites Championship is also being hotly contested heading into the AMA Arenacross Series finale. Thanks to back-to-back fifth-place efforts last weekend, BNTQ.net/TUF Honda’s Kevin Markwardt has moved to within four points of reigning Western Regional Champion Chad Cook, who rides for HOK Racing Kawasaki. In Reno, Cook experienced one of his roughest outings of the season, and saw his points lead shrink from 10 points to four.

With only one main event and 18 laps remaining for the 2012 season, both Cook and Markwardt will be ready to lay it all on the line on Saturday night for the chance to claim a coveted AMA title.

The 12th and final round of the 2012 AMA Arenacross Series season commences on Saturday, February 25, from the Target Center in Minneapolis. Opening ceremonies kick off at 7 p.m. CT.

Honda Tops the Opening Round of the 2012 Supercross Lites East Class

Press Release

Round seven of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship series took place this weekend in Arlington, TX. Nearly 54,000 fans filled Cowboys Stadium to watch not only the seventh round of the series, but also the opening round of the Lites East class. GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia, who is also the defending Lites East Champion, started his season strong by winning the main. His teammate Kevin Windham and Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Brayton rode noteworthy races, finishing in the top ten.

After spending most of the week recovering from his crash in San Diego, Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Brayton put together a respectable ride aboard his CRF450R. He finished a solid fifth in his heat race. In the main, Brayton grabbed a mid-pack start and had a close call on the first lap when another rider landed on his right side. Despite damage to his exhaust, Brayton spent the remaining 20 laps battling his way up a ninth-place finish.

“The night went okay since I came into this round not even knowing if I was going to be able to ride. I did a lot of therapy this week but wasn’t able to get on the bike,” said Brayton. “In the main I got landed on in the first lap. The right side of my body and my muffler were pretty messed up. I am happy to be going home safe and have another week for rehab. I think I’ll be able to go to Atlanta more on point like I was before my crash in San Diego.”

TwoTwo Motorsports’ Chad Reed started the day off strong after laying down the fastest lap time in qualifying, giving him first gate pick headed into the heat races. He finished a solid second in his heat race in front of GEICO Honda’s Kevin Windham. In the main Reed got a good start and quickly made his way into the second-place position. He was putting a lot of pressure on the rider in first place until going down hard in the whoops. Reed was taken off the track by the Asterisk medical team and was unable to finish the race.

For a second week in a row GEICO Honda’s Kevin Windham had an upsetting end to his night. After qualifying fifth quickest during the day, he finished third in his heat. During the main he rode in fifth the majority of the race until making a few mistakes and dropping to seventh place.

“The GEICO Honda was running incredible and things were going great almost all day,” said Windham. “I don’t know what happened but with three to four laps to go I made some major mistakes causing me to get passed a few times. I don’t want to dwell on it too much since the majority of the day went well but I just need to focus on finishing the last five laps strong. I’m excited for Atlanta which will be my 200th start and am hoping to turn things around and make it on the podium.”

Defending Lites East Champion Justin Barcia started his 2012 season exactly where he left off last year—on top of the podium. After setting the quickest lap time in qualifying, Barcia rode a solid heat race finishing in first place. In the main he nabbed a fourth place start and quickly began charging to the front of the pack. On lap eight Barcia made the pass for first and quickly pulled away from the rest of the field to take his first win of the season.

“The night started okay. I got a bad start in the heat race but was still able to take the win,” said Barcia. “I turned it around in the main, got a pretty good start and made some strong passes. I ended up getting the lead and was able to pull a nice gap. This is a great way to start off the season and I am excited to head to Atlanta.”

JDR/J-Star/KTM Race Report – 2012 Dallas Supercross

Posted by adrenalinemx on February 20, 2012

News –

Press Release

JDR/J-Star/KTM riders Malcolm Stewart and PJ Larsen finished 6th and 8th at the opening round of the AMA East Lites Supercross Series held at Cowboy Stadium.

Both riders had decent practice times during the morning qualifying sessions and were looking forward to lining up for their first heat race of the season. Larsen was up first in heat number one where he earned a mid-pack start and was able to come up to 5th place to qualify into the main event. In heat number two Stewart launched off the line to a 6th place start. During the six lap heat he was able to pass all the way up to 3rd to earn a great gate pick for the main event.

In the main event Stewart earned an impressive start inside the top five. On lap two he was sitting in 5th place behind Ken Roczen. The top five riders remained close throughout the majority of the race making a very entertaining main event for the Dallas crowd. Stewart closed in on Justin Bogle during the tail end of the race and made a pass right after the whoop section. The two riders collided during the pass and caused both riders to lose positions. Stewart reentered the race in 9th position with only a few laps to go. He quickly made a few more passes to move up to 6th place by the end of the race. His teammate, Larsen, started the race inside the top ten and rode a consistent pace to finish 8th overall for the night.

JDR/J-Star/KTM Team Manager Nathan Ramsey, commented, “Overall we are excited that both of our team riders finished inside the top ten tonight. However, we know that both riders are capable of finishing inside the top five and we are looking forward to the next round for another chance to finish up top.”

Next Round: Atlanta, GA – February 25, 2012

The Dallas Supercross delivered another excellent race. Ryan Villpoto won the 20 lap 450 Supercross Main Event, taking his third win in a row, while also increasing his series points lead. In the initial East Lites 250 race of the year, an action packed 15 lap Main saw Justin Barcia take the win over Darryn Durham and Ken Roczen.

It’s raining outside this afternoon, but perfect inside the famed Cowboys Stadium. Not only is there a battle between four AMA Supercross Series champions for the 2012 Monster Energy Crown (Villopoto, Reed, Dungey, Stewart), but it’s the opening round of the ‘East’ regional series.

250 East Lites qualifying (after 1st practice) - Justin Barcia has quickest lap (48.73), Ken Roczen next (48.91), Malcolm Stewart on KTM third (49.65), Justin Bogle (49.67), and Matt Lemoine also at 49.67. Blake Baggett sixth at 49.77.

450 Supercross Class qualifying - It’s Chad Reed – number 22 on top with the quickest lap – 46.53 seconds. Ryan Villopoto is next – 46.89, then James Stewart (47.07), Ryan Dungey (47.23) and Kevin Windham (47.60).

Opening ceremonies included the lasers, light show, fireworks, music and more that Feld Motor Sports is know for in producing shows. Opening ceremonies also included a ‘transfer’ by Kevin Windham – where he jumped probably jump over 110 feet, launching off a triple jump, and then crossing over two sections of track to land on the finish line! Andrew Short felt that he should injury from last weekend is not 100%, and will not be racing tonight.

250 East Heat 1 – Blake Baggett jumped out to the early lead followed very closely by Ken Roczen. Heading into the bowl turn after the whoops the two riders were dead even with Roczen to the inside. A simple and clean block pass allowed the German rider to slip by and quickly open up a gap on Baggett. Behind the number 12 machine was the number 19 of Kyle Cunningham, who began to apply pressure as the laps wore on. Supercross rookie, Justin Bogle sat alone in fourth place for most of the heat, looking very strong in his initial ride indoors. At the finish, Roczen took the unchallenged win, well ahead of Bagget and Cunningham. Bogle and PJ Larsen rounded out the top five.

250 East Heat 2 – Blake Wharton took the holeshot ahead of Darryn Durham and Justin Barcia. Within just one lap, Barcia managed to work his way around Durham and immediately went after Wharton. It didn’t take long for Barcia to latch on to Wharton and that’s when things got interesting. Barcia made a pass attempt along the first rhythm section but Wharton immediately responded. It looked like he would finally make it stick in the turn after the whoops, but Wharton contered by jumping to the inside of the left hand turn before the second triple. The crowd went wild, but Barcia finally made the move. Barcia would go on to take the win ahead of Durham, Malcom Stewart, Wharton (who got bumped out of the way by), and Matt Lemoine in fifth.

450 Supercross Heat 1 – Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Broc Tickle grabbed the holeshot, but was quickly overtaken by defending champ Ryan Villopoto. Jake Weimer came out of the first lap in fourth, but shortly worked his way past Jeff Alessi and Tickle to take over second place. Ryan Dungey had an unfortunate crash right after the holeshot that set him all the way at the back of the pack. It was not until the seventh lap that Dungey found his way into a qualifying position. At the finish it was Villopoto in first, followed by Weimer, Tickle, Davi Millsaps, and Justin Brayton in fifth. Dungey qualified ninth.

450 Supercross Heat 2 – James Stewart took the holeshot ahead of Kevin Windham and Brett Metcalfe. Chad Reed did not have the strongest start but quickly made his way into the top three. Windham held onto second for the first five laps before Reed overtook his position. Stewart would go onto to take the win with Reed in second and Windham in third. Brett Metcalfe and Kyle Partridge rounded out the top five.

Attendance has been announced for this event. In the 2011 event, Feld Motor Sports attracted 51,509 fans. At this race today, the attendance is – 53,952 fans!

250 East 15 lap Main Event – Darryn Durham took the opening holeshot of the East Lites series, inching ahead of Blake Wharton. But Wharton faultered and the GEICO/Honda duo of Justin Bogle and Justin Barcia quickly took his place, inching up on Durham. Barcia would eventually use his typical agressiveness on his teammate to take over first place and go for the lead. Meanwhile, Ken Roczen had already recovered from a mediocre start to begin pressuring Bogle as well.

On lap six, Barcia was finally able to position himself for a pass attempt on Durham after the first rhythm, but Durham countered at the next corner and Barcia was unable to clear the first triple. For several laps, the pair continued to battle until Barcia was finally able to make the pass stick, taking over first place. In the battle for third, Roczen had been pressuring Bogle for sometime and made his move just before the first triple, jumping up to third place.

Roczen would then go after Durham, and nearly caught him just before the finish line. At the finish, Justin Barcia took the win, followed by Durham, Roczen, Wharton, and in a surprise finish, Phil Nicoletti captured fifth place.

Justin Barcia video interview after the main event.

Supercross 20 lap Main Event – Jeff Alessi snapped the holeshot but it did not take long for Ryan Villopoto and Chad Reed to sneak by and take over the lead positions. From their the duo would begin to break away from the rest of the pack. Further back, James Stewart had a mid pack start and on the second lap, he stalled his machine after the whoop section. Unfortunately his teammate, Davi Millsaps, was right there and crashed into the back of the number seven machine, taking both riders down and dropping them to the back of the pack.

Up front, Villopoto and Reed continued to battle. Reed seemed poised to make his move at times, but would then lose a few feet to Villopoto depending on the section. Going into the sand section, Reed had been a bit faster than Villopoto, and looked poised to make a pass attempt until coming up short on a tricky but small triple that sent him over the bars and out of the race.

Ryan Dungey also did not have the best of starts and slowly worked his way up through the pack. Mike Alessi proved to be a tough competitor, as Dungey, who has finished no worse than fourth this whole year so far, struggled to make a pass work on the number 800. He was eventually able to make his way past and then go after Jake Weimer who had been riding alone in second since Reed’s crash. In the closing laps, Dungey had closed in on Weimer. On lap 18 he attempted a pass, but it didnt work. On the next and final lap, he was finally able to make it stick in an aggressive move on Weimer. At the finish Villopoto nailed his third win in a row ahead of Dungey, Weimer, Mike Alessi, and Josh Hansen.

Ryan Villopoto – “The track was breaking down. When that happens, you need to be smart. It was a good race, although bummer for Chad (falling).”

Evgeny Bobryshev and The Honda World Motocross Team Head To Mantova, Italy

Posted by adrenalinemx on February 17, 2012

Courtesy Honda World MX. This weekend Evgeny Bobryshev and the Honda World Motocross team will have their first race outing of 2012 at the Mantova Starcross pre-season International in Italy as part of the factory CRF 450R development programme, while teammate Rui Gonçalves will sit out of the event due to a minor injury sustained in training.

After a long winter period of physical training, altitude training and a recent long stint moto training in Sardinia, both riders and team have been working hard in readiness for the new season. With the 2012 CRF 450R now dialed in after weeks of mainly sand riding, both riders are looking forward to returning to the FIM World MX1 series, which begins in early April.

The Mantova event is a useful tool in putting the CRF 450R machines through their paces in a racing environment, and while Gonçalves will sit out of proceedings after straining his right shoulder in training last week, Bobryshev will be making use of the weekend to take in further information for the development of his factory machine. This data can then be transferred to the three day test with the Honda World Motocross team and Honda’s RD department from Japan following the race weekend, where set-up will be refined even more and information collected ready for further analysis prior to the season start.

Evgeny Bobryshev, number 777 says “I’m really looking forward to this weekend, as things so far have been going well for us. We had a really good physical training programme in December and January, so I went to Sardinia for our riding training in a better condition than last year, which made it easier to get everything dialed in. I rode some supercross in December and we had some tests too, so I’ve not had such a big gap off the bike, and now I feel really well prepared for the season. We have done some good work in Sardinia finding a good base setting, especially with the suspension and balance of the bike. I was a little bit tired coming back this week, as we’ve been training and riding a lot, but I’ve had a rest for a few days and I feel ready to go. For Mantova it’s the first race of the season, and it’s important to do nothing stupid, so the plan is to learn more about the bike and if I feel good then we can se e how things go. Then we have some more testing for the few days after the race, and although I’m really happy with the bike now and we made a big step last year, we can maybe try some more small things before the start of the season.”

Rui Gonçalves, number 999 says “We’ve had a good pre-season and the feeling with the bike was strong straight off. The physical preparation in the winter has put me in good shape, and then riding in Sardinia to get used to the bike as well as improve the set-up was good for us. We are continuously working on improving the bike, and the feeling in the team is also very good, so I am happy with how things are going. I strained my shoulder slightly in training last week, so we have decided it is better not to race at Mantova, and concentrate on my preparation with the bigger picture in mind for the year. While it is only a small set-back, I am having some physiotherapy treatment and we are looking forward to continuing with our programme ahead of the start of the season.”

Lorenzo Resta, Honda World Motocross Team Manager says “In the last few weeks with the work done in Sardinia we have found a really good set-up and it’s been really positive for both riders to spend a lot of time on the new bike. We are really excited to go to Mantova, as this is our home race with it being just under an hour from our workshop; it’s definitely the closest event that we compete in. We’ve had a lot of success there in the past by winning all three heats with Kevin Strijbos in 2009, and we won the Grand Prix there in 2008 with Marc De Reuver. However, this year our focus is very much on using the event to gather data for the World MX1 Championship campaign. The level of the race is very high with many of the top riders and factory teams, and although everyone won’t be pushing like they would at a Grand Prix, it’s still an ideal scenario for us to see roughly how things are coming together. Unfortunately Rui won’t race the event, as he has strained his shoulder during training and we have decided that at this stage it’s more important for him to be at 100% than to race at Mantova. So for Bobryshev we’re going to be taking as much data as possible from the race into the test the following week to continue with development of the bike, and we are really looking forward to it.”

For nearly a decade, Steve Bauer and Jeff Tilton have been putting on the Big Air Kids Fair at Loma Linda Children’s Hospital. The charity event brings out Supercross, Freestyle MX and Motocross racers alike and is a great opportunity for everyone involved. This year Myles Richmond and Beau Bamburg held down freestyle duties, while racing stars like Jeremy McGrath, Andrew Short, Josh Hansen, PJ Larsen, Justin Brayton the entire Lucas Oil/TLD/Honda squad, and more came out to help bring some joy to the hospital. Take a look.

And you can ‘flashback’ to the event in 2009 as well!

Anticipation is high for the GEICO Honda team as three of the top motorcycle riders in the world — veteran Kevin Windham, defending Lites East champion Justin Barcia and rookie extraordinaire Justin Bogle — arrive at Cowboys Stadium for this weekend’s AMA Supercross race.

Leading the gang is megastar Windham, an 18-year pro who at almost 34 years of age is the oldest competitor on tour. Windham has been steady over the first six events on his CRF450R and enters Texas ranked fifth in the world, just behind multi-time series champion James Stewart.

“It seems like I say this every year but the competition is top-notch right now,” Windham said. “There’s so much going on every race because the talent level is so high and everyone is fighting for every inch. I’m happy with fifth place for now but I know that if I ride to my ability, we can get on the podium and move up. It just hasn’t happened for us yet.

“My speed has been increasing and my riding has been solid. It’s just a matter of time. I’d love to get up there this weekend because we’re closer to home (in Mississippi) and I know we’ll have a lot of people pulling for us.”

This weekend’s race is the first on the Lites East schedule. Last year, Barcia won three of nine Lites East events and never finished off the podium in securing his first SX world title. Now it’s time to prove himself all over again.

“There’s no reason why we shouldn’t win it again,” Barcia said. “They’ll be five or six riders that can win each weekend and we’re confident we’ll be one of them.

“I know last year doesn’t mean much but it’s pretty awesome to have that red plate on my GEICO Honda. It’s crazy to say I’m the defending champ but that’s where we are. I have to go out there and show everyone I’m still as hungry as ever. We have trained hard and we even raced a couple of times in Europe so I feel very prepared. Now it’s time to race.”

Barcia could get one of his biggest challenges from teammate Bogle, who makes his Supercross debut this weekend on his similarly prepared CRF250R. After tearing up the amateur ranks, Bogle rode the last four Motocross events last season, turning in a runner-up finish in the final moto of the year in Pala, Calif.

“I’m ready,” said Bogle, who hails from Cushing, Okla. “I’ve definitely put in the work and this GEICO Honda team is top-notch. I’m healthy, which is huge, and I’ve spent the last six weeks watching everyone race out West so I think I know what to expect. I’m excited and anxious to see how I match up.

“I think we can run up front. I need to remember that I’ll be on a learning curve but if I can get good starts I should be able to keep the pace of the top riders.”

Practice and qualifying begins at 12:30 p.m. CST with the main event kicking off at 7 p.m. SPEED TV will carry all the action as it happens.
